Viola E. Riley, age 96, of Fremont, NE, died Sunday, July 15, 2012 at South Haven Living Center in Wahoo, NE.
Viola was born April 30, 1916 in Ekalaka, MT, to Alfred and Sophie (Renter) Kortum. She grew up in Dodge, NE and Fremont. Viola Kortum married Rolland “Buzz” Riley April 30, 1938 in Columbus, NE. Buzz died June 17, 1986.
Viola and Buzz owned Fremont’s first sanitation services, Northside Sanitation. In 1950 they moved to a farm near Nickerson before returning to Fremont in 1958, where they owned and operated Riley’s Auction.
Viola was a member of First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for 50 years and was very active in the church. At the age of 80, Viola went to South Carolina to help with Habitat for Humanity with her church. She was a former board member for Izaak Walton in Fremont. She always found time to help people. Viola loved fishing. She was a wonderful, caring, loving mother, grandmother and friend. She was always known as “Granny”. She was truly one of God’s Angels.
Survivors include her sons – R.L. and wife Sharon Riley & Michael Riley and daughter – Sherry Eary all of Fremont, NE; 8 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband – Buzz; 2 daughters – Patti Riley and Janet Howard; 3 brothers – Orville, Virgil & Raymond Kortum; and 2 sisters – Lillian Capps & Leona McMahan.
Funeral Service will be 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at First United Methodist Church in Fremont. The Rev. Greg Hall will officiate. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 3-8 P.M. and with the family receiving friends from 5-7 P.M., at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at church on Wednesday. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery, Fremont.
